This course fulfills federal, state, and local government requirements. Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:Demonstrate comprehension of the complexity of the American democratic system;Define key terms used in the study of the American democratic system;Explain the conditions and values necessary for political democracy to exist;Illustrate the relationship between national, state, and local governments and evaluate the effectiveness of the federal system;Explain how the American system affects the students’ lives in terms of freedom, restraints, and public policy; andApply knowledge to become an active and informed citizen.REQUIRED TEXTBOOKGOVT9, Edward I. In addition to the textbook reading assignments included on the syllabus, there may be short articles or videos/audios posted on Canvas throughout the semester. You will also submit your written work and take quizzes on the Canvas site. Please familiarize yourself with this platform.Quizzes:The on-line quizzes will consist of 20 questions and will assess the student’s understanding of the assigned readings and some lecture material. The quizzes will be timed. Information about the availability of these quizzes is listed in the syllabus and on the CANVAS site. Students enrolled in the course can access this website by going to canvas.losrios.eduand following the instructions for logging in. Students must take the quizzes during the period of theiravailability. Quizzes will not be reset.
