Greetings Professor and Class, Many may say that theories provide a sense of structure that allows an individual practice to explore approaches to patient care. In my experiences theories often seem obscure, to broad, abstract compared to the activities in daily practice as an APN and often contemplate how studying these will help me pass boards. I had initially agreed with Karan due to grand theory being so broad, currently I am in disagreement with her statement. When choosing an area of specialization an APN begins to focus their knowledge and skill in a chosen area. Meleis (2012) discussed that due to this theoretical research will swing towards middle range theories that are less abstract, within a limited scope, focusing on phenomena involved in clinical practice and limited to a particular specialty. Wilson et al. (2015) discussed that many compartmentalize the training and prep of Advanced Practice Nurses to be related to skills based tasks and competencies. Wilson et al. (2015) also clarified that theory is valuable to APN
