In the beginning of The Fall of the House of Usher, we are introduced into a dark, gloomy, sad environment for which a house is present in. Through Poe’s use of imagery and symbolism, the reader gets a sense of death and decay surrounding the house as well as the main character (every part of the house is decaying and dying, ie. walls, pillars, windows, trees, shrubs, and even individual stones can be seen decaying and falling apart) The narrator describes the feeling as, "a sense of insufferable gloom [which] pervaded [his] spirit" as he approached the House of Usher. The impact of this creating an environment that represents foreshadowing (the house literally falling and the usher family falling) but also sets up the classic Poe horror theme. Every part of the setting is made to be mysterious, ghostly, and evoke a sense of fear into the readers mind, and every image and symbol is meant to do the same.
