OVERVIEW The abuse that the mentally ill face in prisons is deplorable, for the government to require their funded prisons to ensure the mental welfare of these prisoners is highly needed. In some places 40% of prisoners have a mental illness, many more possibly have untreated or undiagnosed mental illnesses that are causing inappropriate behaviors towards others and themselves. FINDINGS A. “In state prisons, 73 percent of women and 55 of men have at least one mental health problem. In federal prisons, 61 percent of women and 44 percent of men.
