Wiggins Bryce Wiggins ENG 140.11 Research Paper 27 November 2017 Inspiration and Motivation Behind Sport Films Americans thrive on hard work and dedication. These same quantities are what attract us to and motivates people to understand and learn from sport films. Sport films have always been an American classic that never fail to inspire and motivate us to go the distance. American sport films demonstrate morals that focus on overcoming adversity, achieving goals, and showing humility especially in the films: Rudy , Rocky , and Hoosiers . The three movies represent the essence of the American culture by connecting the audience to real emotions through the sports we play and watch. Our culture lies within the portrayal of sports in movies that influence us to achieve greatness. The American ideology is portrayed in sport films by representing our patriotic county that shares characteristics of freedom and hardworking people dedicated to go beyond their expectations. Americans are embedded in sports and continue to be avid learners of all sporting events that leave a mark on our lives. In his book Considering Identities: Sports in American Film, Aaron Baker writes, “Sports movies generally frame history as adequately represented by the individual desires, goals, and emotional dramas of the main characters…” (8). Baker notes how sport films are based on a shared set of values and circumstances so an audience can relate to its characters, making the experience a narrow and personal narrative. Watching and playing sports are spectacles of what our country is built upon by showing off the athletic ability many find special. Wiggins experiencing gives the audience a better understanding of what sports mean to the people around them. Sports and sport films provide a gateway to values that can be carried with us to strive for our goals and reach greater limits. In the article, “The Sport Film—Its Cultural Significance,” author Scott A.G.M. Crawford notes, “To view an American film is to witness the dreams, values and fear of the American people, to feel the pulse of American culture” (qtd in 46). The movies can influence us positively by teaching us morals, for example, humility, that keeps us confined to the skills we are good at in any aspect of our lives. Sport films are truly the identified culture in which our country stems from to learn valuable moral lessons to prolong our endeavors. The classic film, Rudy , encompasses American values and inspirational moments to persevere through adversity. Rudy Ruettiger, a small, weak, average student strives for his goal to attend and play football for the University of Notre Dame. This goal is very unlikely to happen due to Rudy’s grades and small stature. In addition, Rudy is constantly being doubted by his family and friends by telling him he cannot achieve this goal. His father, Daniel Ruettiger, is the most doubtful of his son’s desire to attend such a prestigious college. Daniel wants Rudy to
