Oral and Topical Medications The 7 required parts of a medication order (page 762) o Patient’s name Full name is used and middle name or initial should be included to avoid confusion with other patients Be careful with patients with same last name on the same unit o Date and time the order is written Helps prevent errors of oversight as different nurses take charge of the patient’s care. o Name of drug to be administered Either by brand name or genetic name Generic name is the safest If unfamiliar with a drug, always look it up o Dosage of the drug Dosages are always in metric system and is the safest measurement system o Route by which the drugs is be administered State clearly because some drugs can be given in more than one way and others may be used safely through only one route. o Frequency of administration of the drug Usually stated in standard abbreviation in the medication order Drugs are always administered punctually as ordered.
