The two novels, which I have chosen to read, are The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini and Mister Pip by Lloyd Jones. I chose The Kite Runnerto read because it is about how the bond of friendship can stay strong during the toughest of times in war and violence. I chose Mister Pipbecause the location of the story intrigues me as I havenever before heard about Bougainville Island before, and I want to learn more about thisplace. Growing up in a multi-cultural city as Toronto has shaped who I am today. The different cultures, customs, and ethnicities helped me to be appreciative of everything that is different. Culture has made me not to be a racist or biased when it comes to people who are different from me in their beliefs, origin, and life style. I grew up in the 2000’s, a time where many important changes have occurred in society especially in the case of the role of women. I do not feel pressured to get married and have children as it was the case in the past. Instead, I am free to decide the way I wish to live without being a target of criticism. My sexual orientation is my ownbusiness and I do not have to feel ashamed or afraid to be who I am. I grew up in Canada, a place that is very peaceful and where people can feel safe and free to express themselves individually. Democracy is well established and thelaw is just. This has shaped me in terms of having a stable life with a family that has not suffered from violence. I have been able to go to school without interruptions and have an education that has made me fall in love with reading and history. These experiences with culture, time and place have helped me to shape me in an immense way, and I hope that they will continue to help shape my identity and fate inthe near future.
