Response Paper on Simon Sinek’s TED Talk “Why Good Leaders Make You Feel Safe” Simon Sinek started his TED talk with a story about a military captain and his actions during a mission in Afghanistan in 2009. One of his soldiers suffered a gunshot to the neck, and the captain gave him a kiss before the medical evacuation helicopter took to the rescue. Sinek asked, “where do people like that come from?” (Sinek) He discussed the differences between how this military captain treated his soldier and how we treat people in business. Leaders in business, managers, CEOs, supervisors, etc., get bonuses as a result of increasing revenue no matter the cost to their subordinates. Sinek emphasized that in business underperformers are punished instead of coached and how that can be detrimental to a good professional environment. Instead of pushing employees and assigning metrics that are incredibly difficult to accomplish, leaders should try to create a safe atmosphere that will result in trust and cooperation between subordinates and leadership.
