Katie Lysne English 102 Professor Allen October 9, 2017 Beginning and Ending of Eras The judicial history of our world is filled with bloody and violent punishments. From burning at the stake to execution by firing squad, the punishments have been brutal and criticized as inhumane. One such method of execution is the guillotine, infamous as the symbol of the Reign of Terror in France in the 1790s. We look back at the guillotine as a medieval execution device, but it remained a means of carrying out the death sentence until more recently than expected. In fact, the last time a guillotine was used in France, 1977, was the same year Star Wars: A New Hope came out in theaters. Before the guillotine’s debut, popular executions fit the crime. “The authorities often burned heretics and witches…Anabaptists, who practiced a second baptism while adults, suffered execution by drowning, a penalty referred to as their ‘third baptism’” (Lynn).
