Symbol- A Sign that Stands for Something else - Characteristics of symbols: sign that stands for something else Arbitrary/conventional: random, made up Abstract: the symbol is not the thing itself Referential: reference to something else Question #2: Define iconic and indexical symbols and give two examples of each. Giving example of type and tell which symbol it is An iconic symbol is a sign that looks like the object it is supposed to represent. Examples of iconic symbols are: A photograph or a road sign An indexical symbol is a sign that is arbitrarily chosen to represent something. Examples of indexical symbols are: An American Flag, or an olive branch (peace) when we see it we know what it means Question #3: What are the characteristics of symbols? What is the relationship of symbols to objects and concepts on the semantic triangle? -
