The elements of a good design. What are the elements of good design? Where do these best practices come into play? We need to not just focus on users, but design first. Applications, web based database or software are intended for the users; however, we need to get out of that thinking. Any application designing can be challenging and requires the engineer to understand the purpose and usefulness of this developmental process of application design. There have been so many improved software solutions making large amounts of data immediately accessible for cloud computing, federating more data that was at one time hidden within legacy applications and now by enabling data, applications have become more agile. According to the text by Spool, he states: “Applications, like all software systems, are obviously intended for people to use. Not so, obvious is that users may not be the single most important factor in the application design equation. This I not an academic argument, particularly for the harried designer or development manager who must decide how and where to spend limited time and other resources. What should be the real focus of your design efforts?” (Spool, 2007) Understanding users as people is far less important than understanding them as participants in activities. A good application has a visual and interaction design that directly reflects how activities, actions and operations fit together. The key to good application design is knowing and

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
