Music has a wondrous ability of transcending language, emotional, and socioeconomic barriers to communicate emotions and ideas through its melodies and harmonies. As a result, music has been used for many purposes from entertainment to political rallying. This versatility has caused music to be able to be used in many dual roles in our society. One important dual role music has played is by both dissolving and enforcing social class in society. One major role music has had in society is as a symbol of status within the society’s hierarchal structure. Michael B. Bakan in the book World Music Traditions and Transformations speaks of the Javanese gamelan instruments and music being a representation of authority in ancient Java. He says that gamelan’s, “many and varied layers of intersecting melody, extremely wide range of instrumental and vocal timbres, and highly stratified polyphonic texture… symbolizes the extreme social stratification
