The author who wrote this play had a unique idea. He made non-human objects come to life with more humanistic characteristics. He made the spool of tapes symbolize Krapp’s whole life. The tapes had the ability of bringing emotions out and deep thoughts when in use. This idea of the value of material things is very common in our society. Often times older people, like Krapp, feel alone and unfilled. Older people often hold tight onto the past and things like old photographs and memories because it is all they have, just like how Krapp did. This shows the idea of memory and time. This play also showed the idea of feeling alone and lonely as Krapp reflected on his life. The tapes show how he pushed away a lot of live in his life like with Bianca and when he celebrated his birthday alone in a pub. These are common
