Adam Versenyi Lecture: (5 min late) -idea that the struggle for change/social freedom isn’t inward, but comes from ideas going against the dominant theory/ideas/regime of the time (more marxist) Early 1960’s: Pedagogy of the Oppressed: Paulo Freire: created/changed literacy to be more relevant to the ppl (ie: hoes, wash basins, etc) *idea of starting where the person is, as opposed to pushing something on them Howard Gardner: Extraordinary minds How to teach literacy when there exist 40 different languages in the nation (ex: brazil, peru) Boal -any means of communication = a language -they gave cameras to their students to take photos of most important things in their lives -whole series of power structures and representations behind the photos Theatre of the oppressed Forum theatre – go in a put on a short skit/performance piece of social import, then stopped b/f the ending, and the audience performs/devises/decides the ending -the use of theatre as a kind of rehearsal for revolution: trying out/on dif solutions w/in a protected space to see if it’ll work/not Joker theatre – each actor, at one time or another, plays all of the roles: goal = to show all of the perspectives. Any actor can step out and play the joker and ask the audience a reality question abt the performance: representation: your life is not fixed, you can change it Invisible theatre – bunch of actors going into an expensive restaurant, one eats a huge meal, and then says I can’t pay you for it, then goes through wages of waiters/chefs/garbagemen/etc, while the rest of the actors goes through and asks for collections
