GOOD WRITING ESSENTIALS A simple desire of all serious writers is to produce “good writing.” To accomplish this, a writer must address several fundamental issues. He must know his audience and his subject matter, capture the reader’s attention while making his writing believable, and edit his writing to ensure it flows smoothly and is grammatically correct. If the writer can conquer these basics, he will be successful as an author. Understanding the audience which he hopes to attract to his writing will help a writer determine whether or not the subject matter is a good fit before he begins writing. No one would write at a third grade level when trying to appeal to a college-educated adult. Neither would an author write an engineering book filled with technical details on how to construct a dam capable of withstanding a Level 4 Hurricane for elementary students. Additionally, the author should research and understand his subject matter. Think how poorly a paper would read if the writer
