“The slave went free, stood a brief moment in the sun, then moved back again toward slavery.” W.E.B. Dubois. This quote is a perfect interpretation of Reconstruction. During this time the South was rebuilt, and African Americans gained citizenship and the right to vote. Unfortunately, emancipation only gave former slaves a very brief glimpse of freedom and equality. Soon after The Compromise of 1877 took place which ended Reconstruction. For a short period of time blacks had civil and political rights and were able to feel what it was like to be free, but they were taken away as society reverted backwards.
