This section describes soldering principals and tells how to make reliable solder connections. (Normally this would be a sentence or two and in your own words capture the main ideas.) 1. 3pts Solder. There are many types of solder, but the most common type used for electrical soldering is an alloy of 60% tin and 40% lead. This alloy melts at about 190 C, a relatively low temperature. When solder is heated until it melts, and is placed on an equally hot conductor, the solder atoms are absorbed into the solid conductor atoms, forming an alloy between the conductor and the solder.

16 Dec 2016 2 of 6 dad Lab2 Soldering SKIP 2. 3pts Soldering. Soldering is accomplished by first bringing the two conductors to be joined in close contact over a reasonable area. If flux cored solder is not used, flux is first applied. The conductors are then heated with a soldering iron, and the solder is applied to the junction. With flux-cored solders, the flux melts out of the core and flows over the conductors. When the junction becomes hot enough, the solder melts and wets the conductors. Capillary action distributes the solder within the joint. The joint is now allowed to cool, forming a solid connection. A proper solder joint has a shiny bright surface and the solder makes a smooth transition to the other metal. A poor solder joint, called a "cold" solder joint, has a grainy appearance with a corner or ball where the solder meets the metal. This often results when the joint is jarred during cooling. Re-heating usually will repair such joints.
