Running Head: ESSENTIAL STRATEGIES FOR NCLEX PREPARATION11Essential Strategies for NCLEX Preparation andTheir Success in First Time Test TakingCarrington College
ESSENTIAL STRATEGIES FOR NCLEX PREPARATION2AbstractThis paper examines my performance on the Nurse Assessment Test (NAT) and evaluates myplan for the remainder of the semester in relation to two testing strategies that have beenresearched and accepted by Kaplan for the promotion of necessary preparation techniques for theNational Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nursing (NCLEX-RN). Each strategybeing discussed, however, differs in their approach to the common goal of successful completionof the NCLEX-RN and contains different view-points in the National Council LicensureExamination (NCLEX) vision of success. Ericksen and Vest (2016) suggest that critical thinkingskills are the key to success, defining it as “a necessity in nursing” (Ericksen, 2016). Anotherarticle from Mattison (2013) credits NCLEX success to the repetition of practice questions andexams, bringing to light a different approach to preparing for the exam. This paper evaluates mypreparation, performance and test results on the NAT , in addition to my study plan for thissemester, while comparing and contrasting with the research of Ericksen (2016), Vest (2016), andMattison’s (2013) in order to identify successful strategies to fully understand the necessarypreparations required by myself, for efficacious completion of the NCLEX-RN.Keywords:Nurse Assessment Test, National Council Licensure Examination forRegistered Nursing, National Council Licensure Examination
ESSENTIAL STRATEGIES FOR NCLEX PREPARATION3Essential Strategies for NCLEX Preparation andTheir Success in First Time Test TakingDozens of different strategies have been developed to study and prepare for theNational Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nursing (NCLEX-RN), focusingon developing good understanding of content, staying confident, not giving up, andstaying focused. However, these strategies only cover the mental preparedness requiredfor the NCLEX, what they fail to emphasize is how to prepare you academically andintellectually for the exam, which is described as being similar to running an endurancemarathon (Ameritech, 2016). In this paper I will not be discussing mental preparedness, rather, I will be discussing my performance on the NAT in comparison with Kaplanrecommended strategies of exercising “critical thinking skills” and “practice test taking”,in order to determine how I will anticipate what will be required of me this semester tobest prepare for and pass the NCLEX exam.NCLEX has test plan categories of which 4 different topics are included, psychosocial integrity, physiological integrity, safe and effective care environment, andhealth promotion and maintenance (NCSBN, 2016). The NAT exam we took scores us oneach of these categories individually and compares our scores with national averages. My
