Intro: A World of States ● Regions are user defined ● First identified as state ● State taxes you, build roads...etc The State of States ● Every square inch of earth is politically and legally defined as independent Sovereign State ● Owned and operated by government by those place ● Even if they are not sovereign state, they are agreed upon by sovereign states around them, places like Antarctic region ● What is it all about? ○ Purple: oldest states in the world, like the U.S., China, Iran, European countries (oldest sovereign state) ○ Most are younger, like Africa ○ It’s a new idea ● What happened before? ○ People would have first identified as a group of people, like ethic, tribe, clan ○ There is a person in charge, a leader, kings, queens, sovereign ruler of the people, not a place ○ There is kind of french not kind of france ● Sovereign State ○ In the U.S., we call countries, but we should call them states. ○ A state is a legally defined territory that has been recognized by other states ○ 193 states in the world right now ○ There are some coming on board ● Nation ○ Group of people who share a common culture ○ Unlimited number of nations ○ Like the cherokee, native american, zooloo in Africa, Scots in Scotland, the french, the german, the japanese, the korean...etc ● Nation - State ○ A group of people who share a common culture and rule themselves in a defined political area ○ Like Germany with German, France, Europe, they invented this. Iran, China, Japan, Korea, ● Is every state a nation-state? ○ No ○ Like the United States, India, Suedan (Arabia and African) ● 2011 Update ○ Sudan has split into two sovereign states ○ South Sudan has become its own state in july 2011 ■ Politically unstable, poor ■ Newest sovereign state in the world ● The United States ○ Most consider it to be a sovereign state ○ Not because of shared ethnicity, languages ○ Has a common culture: ideas, personal freedom, person rights...etc ○ Nation state
● Are there nations without states? ○ Common culture ○ Famous: basque, kurd, Abkhazia, south ossetia, Balastine, Kosovo ● Why not let them by their own state: ○ Sovereign state never willingly give up territory ○ They will sell land, but not willingly ○ Money or fight ○ You never know what that territory is worth ○ Cannot predict future ● How to become a sovereign state? ○ You don’t need anything but sovereignty ○ It’s changing so fast in today world 3.1 What is it? How do you get it? ● Sovereignty ● What is it? ○ The quality of having supreme independent authority over a territory ○ No other power can super sees the actions of the ruler of the sovereign states ○ The king’s law is the law in that state ○ Cannot be overruled by anything outside of the country ● How to prove that to the world?
