Study Guide for Exam I HDF 313 How to study for the exam Go through both your lecture notes & the text using this study guide. They generally follow pretty much the same order. The lecture notes focus on particular parts of each topic covered in the text more than others, and flesh out these topics with examples. important to study. To help you study the text, the website for the 5 th edition includes flash cards that may also helpful (go to the class web site & click on “External Links”). This test will be 100% multiple choice (50 questions worth .5 point each). Ch. 1- Lecture 1: The Nature of Development: Theories (pp. 4-26) What is development? -Consists of age-related changes that are: a. Orderly : changes follow a logical sequence, each one paving the way for future changes and making sense in light of what went b4. b. Cumulative : each phase includes all that went before it as well as something more. c. Directional : development always moves toward greater complexity. What is a theory ? o a set of interrelated statements that serve as frameworks for interpretation of facts and findings, and for guiding scientific research. What are the characteristics of a valid theory? Is sensible and consistent o Organizes, integrates, and makes sense of a body of research findings o Must be testable o Critical/sensitive periods Critical: A limited time during which some characteristic of a developing organism is susceptible to influences that can bring about specific & permanent change. Sensitive: Environmental influences are more sensitive at this time, but not necessarily critical o Qualitative vs. quantitative change Qualitative: fundamental transformations in a child’s abilities or characteristics over time involves a fundamental transformation in an ability or characteristic: DISCONTINUOUS Quantitative: increases in the amount of an ability or characteristic a child already has involves an increase in the amount of an existing ability or characteristic: CONTINUOUS. o Developmental stages o Normative vs. individual development Normative: the general changes and reorganizations in behavior that virtually all children share as they grow older. (typical or average) Individual: it refers to individual variation around the normative course of development….some children progress towards certain achievements in the same way as other children but at a slower pace i.e. walking talking counting to ten etc. Also refers to continuity within each child’s individual developmental pathway over time…. .For example, and exuberant and confident 2 year old is less likely to end up hesitant and withdrawn 3 yrs later than is a 2 yr old w/ a more negative developmental history. Know the basic theoretical assumptions of each of the 6 major theories of development discussed in the text
