Biology Pedigrees & Karyotypes ___ Notes Human Genes Scientific cut out chromosomes when they are condensed for mitosis Pair up in matching sets Called a karyotype Karyotypes A picture of the chromosomes from a huamn cell arranged in pairs by size First 22 pairs are called autosomes Last pair are the sex chromosomes XX female XY male X chromosomes- pink Y chromosomes - blue Karyotypes & Mutations Trisomy Having 3 copies of the chromosomes instead of the pair Examples: Down’s Syndrome- trisomy 21 Klinefelter’s -XXY Monosomy One copy of a chromosome instead of 2 Examples: Turner’s Syndrome Pedigree Chart Shows the relationships within a family over several generations Can show how traits are inherited 1
