Field Notes #1 Two Hours: LA Fitness Kids Club Starting Time: 8:00 AM Date Observed: 02-09-2018 Setting: Standing in a gated square cubical. The cubical is closed off for the younger children and adults. It has three very used swings, a desk chair, and a jumper that has its pieces everywhere. The counter is filled with parents backpacks and bags, that are filled with extra things for the kids. Outside the cubical there is play area that is half padded with foam and half tile. On the padded side there is a tall plastic tree with a slide going through it. There are mirrors and other manipulatives on the wall. On the tile side there is a small benched table, in front of the huge window, for children and a television. There are about two small children in the play area. The childcare watcher is standing on the tile with her arms crossed watching the children. A child, who looks to be about two, with black thick curly hair, and wearing grey sweat pants and a blue soccer shirt is in the corner of the room, on the tile, and against the window, crying “Mommy”, over and over again. The child care watcher goes over and kneels next to him. The boy, with a pouty lip, and big brown watery eyes, looks over at her. The childcare watcher talks softly to the boy and tells him that his “mom will be back soon”. As the worker continues to get up and go back to standing and watching the other children, the boy looks back out the window and continues to cry “mommy”. The other child with wispy brown hair, looks to be about one, is standing and staring at the television. She is standing with her mouth wide open and her blue eyes wide. She then walks to get closer to the television, but stumbles and lands on her butt. The stumble didn’t seem to hurt or phase her, because she got up quickly and continued towards the television. 8:15 AM Setting: Still in the same cubical. More children continue to be dropped off by their parents, there are about four children now, ranging from infants to two years old. A mom, with brown hair and a slender build drops of her baby, who appears to be a little older than one, but not yet two. As she kneels to put the baby on the floor to play, the baby clings to her and begins to cry and yell. The mom says, “it’s ok” and proceeds to put her on the floor and leave. The baby still yelling and crying on the floor, is picked up by the childcare watcher. The watcher, shushes her and bounces the baby up and down and begins to walk over to the mirrors on the walls. Once the baby reaches the mirrors she stops crying and begins to smile with tears still in her eyes. The watcher makes funny faces and the baby looks at her and then looks at the mirror still smiling. The baby seems to forget that her mom left, and the watcher puts her down to walk and play. The baby proceeds to walk with a little bit of a wobble, almost like a pregnant woman waddling, she waddles to a ball that is medium sized and blue, she crouches down and with both hands picks up the ball. She brings her mouth to the ball and begins to try to bite it.
