Catacombs 274 – an underground cemetery consisting of a subterranean gallery with recesses for tombs, as constructed by the ancient Romans. 275 apocalyptic – describing or prophesying the complete destruction of the world. Kingdom of God – the reign or rule of God, where God’s will is done and his power is evident. 276 parables – a simple story used to illustrate a moral or spiritual lesson, as told by Jesus in the Gospels. crucifixion – the execution of a person by nailing or binding them to a cross. Logos – literally “word”. Apostle – each of the twelve chief disciples of Jesus Christ. Pentecost – the Christian festival celebrating the descent of the Holy Spirit on the disciples of Jesus after his Ascension, held on the seventh Sunday after Easter. 279 Resurrection – A rising from the dead. Diaspora – the dispersion of the Jews beyond Israel. 280 Gnosticism – a prominent heretical movement of the 2nd-century Christian Church, partly of pre-Christian origin. Gnostic doctrine taught that the world was created and ruled by a lesser divinity, the demiurge, and that Christ was an emissary of the remote supreme divine being, esoteric knowledge (gnosis) of whom enabled the redemption of the human spirit.
