Empirical Research -based on observation -includes hypothesis -collect data, etc. Experimental Research -treatment/manipulation -true experiment (random assignment) -experimental and control group(s) -one group gets treatment one does not -shows cause/effect relationship Non-Experimental Research -no treatment/manipulation -observe & record data -I.E.: surveys, case studies, longitudinal research, naturalistic observation, archival research -only shows correlation not causation Variables in Non-Experimental Studies -variables must be mutually exclusive and exhaustive -categorical: variable that places people into categories (male/female) -continuous: variable with no distinct groups (SAT Scores) -independent (predictor)/dependent(criterion) Variables in Experimental Studies -independent variables (new drug) -dependent variable (depression) -multiple IV’s and DV’s- (i.e.): prozac may help w/headaches, too
