Discussion:Ashleigh Martin:1. The American family is constantly changing, as more and more people are remaining single or getting married later in life. Many adults are also divorced, living alone, or cohabitating with a partner; a concept that was once previously frowned upon. Wives are also more likely to work full-time jobs in modern society, meaning less and less women are fulfilling the once-expected role of being a stay-at-home mom. Like the dynamics of the family, functions of the family are ever-changing. Currently, family functions include regulating sexual behavior, reproduction, rearing children, and providing a primary group for individuals. 2. There are many social psychological factors that contribute to family problems. For example, single family homes have been thought of as undesirable, or less than ideal, which may cause the family to feel rejected by society. Attitudes also contribute to problems of abuse within the family, as menthat abuse their children often try to justify or rationalize their behavior. Some Americans may even agree with this behavior, as a fourth of them even believe that some women wantto be abused. Like attitudes, values also contribute to family problems. Many of these values revolve around monetary success, whichrequires long hours at work that may interfere with family life. Parents are constantly striving to be successful, which may also put a strain on the relationships within the family. Finally, there are various ideologies that cause problems in family life, such as the idea that successful, happy families are completely free from conflict. These ideas are completely unrealistic, and may actually lead to more emotional stress because of suppressed issues.3.
