Chapter 11 102 Motivation Aaron Ralston : cut his arm off to survive Instinct: rigid and predictable. Pattern of behavior that does not require learning Drive Reduction Theory: when you’re really hungry, thirsty, angry, stressed; causes a drive to arouse motivation to reduce the internal state Incentives are often outside of our control Optimal Arousal: we are motivated to bring our arousal up to an optimal level. When you’re bored, you might bring things to bring up your arousal level. Curiosity: open to new experiences Abraham Maslow: their is a hierarchy of basic needs. They have to have basic needs met first in order to move up. Motivation starts with basic needs; food, water. Then they move up. Hunger When you are deprived of you food, you become obsessed with it. When countries become more westernized, they also tend to overeat. They Hypothalamus is also involved in hunger. It sends out appetite stimulating hormones.
