Cable Television - Community Antenna TV (CATV) o Rural, mountainous areas PA, CO… etc. o developed as a way to bring the signals and bring them down into the town that couldn’t receive signals otherwise. o Was the only way that people could receive TV signals because they could not receive them thru the air - Technology o Most TVs were only set up to receive 12 channels o From 12 channels to 100+ “Tiering”- basic, expanded basic, pay, PPV (think of a wedding cake the higher u go up, the smaller the tiering) o ((TIERING: from bottom to top)) o Basic just gives you the “over the air” channels EX. Fox, ABC, CW, o Expanded basic gives you the “stuff that we like” EX. ESPN, Nickelodeon, WE, DSC, etc. added in 1980s o Pay channels are the ones you order specifically EX. Spanish channels, Noggin, IFC o Pay Per View self explanatory EX. Movies, Boxing, etc. You had to get a converter to get more channels Channels came in 12 every time you add them - Passed rule of what cable companies could and couldn’t do o “Must carry” local stations EX. Must carry CLTV (Chicago),
