Audio and Video Technology How the Process Works… Basic Principles - Transduction o Process of changing one form of energy into another Occurs in television and audio equipment EX. Occurring when microphone picks up Dr. Benjamin’s voice - Noise (interference) o Happens within the signal EX. when a cell phone goes off and your iPod skips (kinda static) - Oscillation o Vibration of light and/or sound EX. when you zoom in and zoom out and the camera oscillates . - Amplitude o Height of waves (or depth) Height from crest to base of one wave o Helps in getting both visual and audio - Wavelength o Distance between two corresponding points on a wave Measured from one crest to another - Frequency o Number of waves that pass a given point in a given time Analog v. Digital - Analog o Stylus vibrates to cut concentric groove o Transforms patterns of sound into corresponding grooves - Digital o Uses sampling so sounds seem continuous o Binary code of zeros and ones Assigns every single point to a particular binary code
