Midterm Review 1. Four categories of rural definitions- list and define a. Cultural: What is the history of the community? b. Occupational: what jobs do the members of the community fulfill and what degree of importance does that job have for the community? c. Ecological: The pure number of people who reside in the community. The US census bureau defines rural as “not urban”. Population 2,500 is considered rural but what about 2,501 is that more urban than the other? d. Environmental: this is physical features a rural community has. Number of buildings. 2. Reasons why definitions could be problematic or beneficial a. Problematic - There is a lack of detail, lack on complexity, lack of capactiy to measure “shades” of rurality, and the inclusion of rural areas in urban definitions. There is no one definition of what rural means, different research and studies cannot be compared b/c there is no way of knowing if the two groups being compared are the same groups b. Beneficial -
