Deena Othman MUS 103 Professor Bierman 9/15/17 Reading Reaction #1 “The Negro Artist and the Racial Mountain” In the short essay written by Langston Hughes, he begins to describe an event, in which occurred with a Negro man explaining how he wanted to be a poet, but not a Negro poet. Meaning, he wanted to write like how a white person would and be viewed in that sense as being white. Hughes conveys his overall disagreement and disappointment with this by expressing that fact that no colored man/woman should ever be ashamed of who they are and what the color of their skin is. They should be proud of being black and be proud to connect with the black community because if they don’t have each other’s backs then who will? He explains the concept of how in society there is a huge social difference between blacks and whites, but that doesn’t mean black people should try to copy white people.
