Deena Othman 10/17/17 Professor Bierman Music Essay 1 Music expresses one’s thoughts and feelings in a way where our words cannot. Jazz has been called America's classical music, and for good reason. Along with the blues, its forefather, it is one of the first truly indigenous types of music to develop in America. Jazz music is one genre that can best be described as raspy, edgy, rough, smooth, pretty, soulful, warm, and dark all at the same time. During the Jazz Age, many jazz artists rose and prospered by introducing their incredible talents and sound, which changed our world of music for the better. New Orleans is known as the birthplace of Jazz, where Africans, both slave and free, and American Indians shared their cultures and intertwined with other European settlers. At this time, New Orleans was extremely diverse in cultures, which included African, French, and Spanish heritage. This mix of varying cultures and diversity led to the wonderful creation of Jazz music and since then has caused an impact on the varying types of music. Jazz music instantly blew up and become widely known and popular among individuals and musicians. Different styles of music played an important role and influenced the birth of jazz. Such musical styles included, popular tunes, marches, rags, light opera, hymns and spirituals, and brass-band music. The mixture of these styles mainly affected the Black community, as they discovered a different way to express their musical aspects and played from their heart and soul.
