Deena Othman Mus 103 Professor Bierman 12/5/17 Take home exam The bebop era was an important and influential time for music throughout the mid-1940s. Inspiring artists developed bebop, and a new and unique style of music was created during this time period. Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie were substantial in the development of bebop. Bebop changed certain roles of race and rhythm section, as well. In the piece, ”So What” artists Miles Davis and John Coltrane both played beautiful solos that were extremely different from the other. Each artist highlighted their best skills and abilities in the piece, and it was evident among them. Bebop is a style of jazz that developed in the early and mid-1940s and it characterized by improvisation, fast tempos, rhythmic unpredictability, and harmonic complexity. Bebop can be categorized as a wildly thrilling music style that challenged many aspects of typical jazz. It was first developed among younger African American musicians. Groups of bebop were typically smaller in size and consisted of smaller ensembles, such as quartets and quintets. This allowed for more solo improvisations rather than other types of larger music groups. The solos often consisted of rapid notes that differed majorly from the actual melody of the song. With a focus on improvisation, bebop allowed for an explosion of innovation. These musicians particularly focused on the expansion of traditional notions, such as melody, rhythm, and harmony. They also worked to transform not only the musical language of jazz but also on the role of each

instrumentalist within the jazz ensemble. With quirky melodies at an extremely fast speed, the music was also challenging from the audience’s perspective. Bebop developed through numerous musicians who contributed to the making of this new and unique style of music. Musicians such as, alto saxophonist Charlie Parker, trumpeter John Birks “Dizzy” Gillespie, pianists Thelonious Monk and Earl “Bud” Powell, and drummers Kenny “Klook” Clarke and Max Roach.
