Deena Othman Professor Bierman Mus 103 Reading Reaction 4 11/27/17 Beneath the Underdog In the autobiography written by Charles Mingus, he wrote about personal experiences he went through during his time as a jazz musician/performer. He focused mainly on the different musicians and groups he encountered throughout his career and how it impacted him as a person and performer. He wrote in exquisite detail different conversations he had with other popular musicians and his thoughts and feelings about certain topics, as well. Mingus constantly referred to himself in the third person, as “my boy” throughout the reading instead of writing from first person experience, as “I” or “my”. In the first section, Mingus wrote about his early encounter of meeting Fats Navarro who was known for his phenomenal jazz trumpet playing. He wrote about his experience with Fats as the two played on tour together with Lionel Hampton’s band. He
