Rachel Carlson HDFS 429 Brain, Physical Development and Genetics Essay Part I I think it depends on which trait we are talking about to be able to decide if heredity is destiny. With weight problems, for example, weight problems with some people. In some families there are people who have weight problems and it seems as if the whole family is obese. But I personally don’t think that if your mother or father is bigger than you will be too. I believe it is all on how you decide to live. I know with me Alcoholism has ran in my father’s side of the family. And all growing up I was told that I was more prone to becoming an alcoholic than other people my age who were not associated with that disease. I always thought that this was a lie because I believe that a child of an alcoholic parent will not automatically develop alcoholism, and a person with no family history of alcoholism can become alcohol dependent. I never drank alcohol to the point where I depended on it so I never understood why I was at a major risk to becoming an alcoholic.
