Joseph Gogol Dr. Bennett Sociology 1101 05G 10/29/17 Lesson 5 Writing Assignment Ever since civilizations first started to appear in our world there has been a structure to the society. This structure helps a society to be more efficient, connected, and organized. If there was no structure, then the chance of that society making it in the long-run would greatly decrease. Sociologists recognized that communities have structure early on, and the work of both Èmile Durkheim and Ferdinand Tönnes in the late 19 th -Early 20 th centuries. These men created two classifications of a society, with Durkheim naming his organic and mechanical solidarity, and Tönnes referring to his as Gemeinschaft and Gesellschaft. While their work was not collaborative, their findings were essentially the same and societies were able to be classified as larger, where there was much interaction and diversity of values, or small where there is less interaction and shared core beliefs. The community I find myself in today would fit into the category of organic solidarity or Gesellschaft. This is because of the great diversity of beliefs and backgrounds, the interdependent but different jobs of the people, and lastly the use of laws to regulate relations instead of simply imposing uniform rules.
