Joseph Gogol Dr. Bennett Sociology 1101 05G10/29/17Lesson 5 Writing Assignment Ever since civilizations first started to appear in our world there has been astructure to the society. This structure helps a society to be more efficient, connected, and organized. If there was no structure, then the chance of that society making it in thelong-run would greatly decrease. Sociologists recognized that communities havestructure early on, and the work of both Èmile Durkheim and Ferdinand Tönnes in thelate 19th-Early 20thcenturies. These men created two classifications of a society, withDurkheim naming his organic and mechanical solidarity, and Tönnes referring to his asGemeinschaft and Gesellschaft. While their work was not collaborative, their findingswere essentially the same and societies were able to be classified as larger, wherethere was much interaction and diversity of values, or small where there is lessinteraction and shared core beliefs. The community I find myself in today would fit intothe category of organic solidarity or Gesellschaft. This is because of the great diversityof beliefs and backgrounds, the interdependent but different jobs of the people, andlastly the use of laws to regulate relations instead of simply imposing uniform rules.
