General grading guidelines:
1.
Mistakes due to incorrect copying from question, incorrect copying from calculator or typos
on a calculator (i.e. ‘calculation mistakes): -1; for these kind of errors it must be very clear
that those are calculation errors. Moreover, if due to calculation errors you get results that
make no sense whatsoever (i.e. answers that defy basic consistency checks), the deduction
will be -2.
2.
Absence of any explanation for theory questions or an answer that clearly shows severe lack
of understanding: -3 to -5 depending on severeness
3.
More common mistakes, such as forgetting a 2 in front of covariance term in the calculation
of portfolio variance or wrong sign of a hedge position: -2
4.
To discourage ‘shotgun answers’: incorrect statements do lead to deductions, even if the
correct answer is contained somewhere else
5.
Deductions are additive (e.g. a calculation mistake and a ‘common mistake’ together lead to
a deduction of -3)
6.
It is impossible to get negative points for questions
7.
If you get a result that cannot possibly be right and correctly comment on that, I may,
depending on the situation decide to grant you some of the points or deduct a lower number
of points.
