Diversity ProjectReflectionWhat is diversity? Diversity is described as the state of being diverse or a range ofdifferent things (n.d). When thinking on diversity and its definition I often wonder how diversethe world is and how does diversity affect the way we interact with one another. How do weidentify diverse group within our communities and what makes these groups diverse are oftenquestion I have reflected on? When examining my own community setting and the diversepopulation in the area I have to exam my own belief of what I consider diverse. I live in amelting pot of different cultures where Spanish and Creole are spoken frequently and fluently,however, there are many different s of Spanish and Creole dialects. Reflecting on diversity andlearning with the population, strengths and area of improvement I have to examine what I knowabout the diverse groups within my community. In order to determine the population in detail I observed my local school setting to see thepopulation of students and came to the conclusion that my community was predominantlyHispanic. Based on an article from the Miami Herald majority of the schools in Miami DadeCounty Florida shows the rise of Hispanics within the schools in Miami-Dade County. WaldenUniversity Diversity Proficiencies show professional qualities needed for teacher with diversestudents. In relating those proficiencies, the components of importance include: awareness ofself, understanding the learner, a good learning environment, planning, instruction andassessment, and professional practice (RWRCOEL). In order to identify the diversity within mycommunity I had to make sure that I could follow the diversity proficiencies. I understand that inorder to demonstrate strength as an educator I needed to be more self-aware. To understand thediverse needs of the student to be able to evaluate them I must identify differences in learning,performance, and how to facilitate lessons. I try to implement the RWRCOEL Diversity2
Diversity ProjectProficiencies in my learning environment and use it to determine my student’s strengths and toidentify what needs to be worked on. I realized that in order to put the proficiencies into practiceI must approach each lesson with strategies that will strengthen growth and respect thedifferences within my classroom. Since I live in a community that has many diverse groups Imust always remember that preconceived biases need to be thrown out and I must learn about thedifferences of each culture. This term I have learned that there are different instructional tools tofacilitate lessons and to find material that can be related to the students learning needs. Due tobeing in a diverse area it is necessary to be open minded and put all biases aside as there arealways ways to deal with students, build rapport and overcome any difference. Reflecting on the
