ACTIVITY 3 Where on Earth Are You?—Solutions 24 Where on Earth Are You?— Solutions Step 1—Coordinates on Earth 1. On Figure 3.1 fill in the four blanks indicating whether it is summer or winter in the North- ern or Southern Hemisphere. Ans: Northern summer, Southern winter; Northern winter, Southern summer. Step 2—The Celestial Sphere 3. In Figure 3.2, notice the four special points along the ecliptic. Using the perspective of an observer in the Northern Hemisphere, label the position of the Sun on the summer solstice, the winter solstice, the vernal (spring) equinox, and the autumnal equinox. 4. Label the north and south celestial poles. 5. Label the celestial equator (which lies directly above Earth’s equator). Step 3—Combining Perspectives In Table 3.1, match the description of the sky with the location from which that observation would be seen. More than one location may apply to each description.
