The role of the informatics nurse has become a huge part of healthcare in the last ten years. The nursing informatics specialty focuses on identification of issues and the design, development, and implementation of effective informatics solutions and technologies within the clinical, administrative, educational, and research domains of practice (American Nurses Association, 2015, p.2). The purpose of this discussion post is to focus on the functional areas of nursing informatics relevant to a position I previously held, as well as identify the Technology Informatics Guiding Education Reform (TIGER) competencies needing improvement. I have previously worked as a staff nurse on an medical-surgical unit at a large local hospital. Out of the thirteen relevant functional areas of nursing informatics, there were two that related to my previous position; educational and professional development, and safety, security, and environmental health. The educational and professional development at this hospital was a thorough and ongoing experience. We frequently attended in-services and training programs. We
