The ability to: metabolize, grow, respond to stimuli, and reproduce Can scientists create life?. ..what is required What is Death? “total and permanent cessation of all vital living functions” All organisms: 1. Carry on metabolism (maintain internal environment - homeostasis) 2. Have receptors – to respond to their environment – nerves, eyes, glands, etc. 3. Reproduce themselves using DNA 4. Composed of one or more cells that grow – there is no life without cells Cell – smallest unit of life able to survive and reproduce on its own How is life organized? (smallest to largest) Atoms Molecules Macromolecules Organelles (found inside cells) Cells Tissue  Organs Organ systems Individuals Population  Community Ecosystem Biosphere Lets look at some of these a bit more 1.
