The Environment Instructor Magerr 31 January 2018 Article Review One In the article, A third of coral reefs 'entangled with plastic by Helen Briggs she provides insight on the pollution and waste that is affecting the coral reefs. To begin, Briggs mentions that over 11 billion items of plastic have been found on one third of the coral reefs that were surveyed in the Asia-Pacific region. This alarming number is not only shocking but estimated to increase to more than 15 billion by the year 2025. Plastic in the water serves a serious threat to marine life because it acts as a breeding ground for disease that harm them. Branching or finger-like forms of coral are the most prevalent to getting tangled up into plastic debris. Adding on, Dr. Joleah Lamb of Cornell University in Ithaca states “Plastic is one of the biggest threats in the ocean at the moment, I would say, apart from climate change”.
