Ethics in Research Psychology relies primarily on human subjects o The people we are messing with are humans Institutional Review Board (IRB) o Job is to look at research proposals to see if the research is appropriate and meets APA ethical standards APA ethical standards o Protect research participants Are not being forced Aren’t being exposed to something harmful o Any risks must be reasonable Embarrassment o Privacy and confidentiality Watch children at a playground (no go) Wiretapping phones (no go) Informed Consent Informed consent o Prior to participating, the psychologist explains what is going on, what the study is about, what to expect o Free to withdraw at any time o Some exceptions for informed consent Naturalistic observation Watching public in natural environment Won’t need informed consent Public records Special issues of consent o Children under 18 Must ask parents/guardian to allow children to participate o Mentally impaired Late dementia, would need power of attorney o Prisoners
