Term: detente Definition: An era of relaxation in the 1970s Term: SALT Definition: A symbol of detente, which was the strategic arms limitations talks. They tried to limit the amount of missiles in the world. Term: Ronald Reagan Definition: anti-Communist president and restarted the arms race. Term: Strategic Defense Initiative Definition: Reagan was an advocator of this, which he imagined as a big shield that was supposed to protect the US from any nuclear weapons. Term: Sandinistas Definition: Overthrew the old regime in Nicaragua that had ties with the US. US became against the Sandinistas.

Term: Contras Definition: US sponsored rebel groups that tried to get rid of the Sandinistas in Nicaragua Term: Soviet War in Afghanistan Definition: Looked very similar to the war in Vietnam. A stalemate emerged in the middle of the 1980s. Term: Iran-Contra Scandal Definition: Scandal in Reagan's administration that tied him to negotiating with terrorists even though he already said that he would not. Term: Solidarity Definition: The first independent trade union. This movement became social and aimed to erase communism in Poland Term: Mikhail Gorbachev Definition: Leader in 1985 of the Soviet Union. He wanted more private industry and free enterprise.
