Articles of Confederation- goal was to unite 13 colonies, not to form a world power (see notes from last class) Massachusetts Acted in a fiscal way- didn’t overproduce paper money like many states were doing Impose taxes to recall paper money- took in far more money in tax revenue than it spent then got rid of paper money Many people had specie o Poll tax was in specie o Farmers in western part of state had difficult getting specie Inflation of farmers o Farmers like inflation, hate deflation o Borrow money in the spring time then give it back Like inflation because the goods they sell back can increase in value Deflation in Massachusetts o Farmers becoming more and more irritated o Daniel Shay takes them on Shay’s Rebellion Shay’s Rebellion Go to an arsenal with the goal of forcing the state capital into ending the deflation 4 of his supporters are killed by guards from the state State punished no one and passed tax relief Main effect : sends Americans the signal that the current government isn’t working o Shay’s rebellion showed that the state government isn’t very powerful Annapolis Convention Number of states sent a representative
