The nose is superior to the chin. Term: Inferior Definition: Below. The stomach is inferior to the head. Term: Medial Definition: Toward the midline. The sternum is medial to the shoulders. Term: Lateral Definition: Toward the side. The ears are lateral to the nose.

Term: Superficial Definition: Toward the surface. The skin is superficial to the heart. Term: Deep Definition: Toward the core. The lungs are deep in the ribs. Term: Ventral ( or anterior) Definition: To the front. The toes are ventral to the heel. Term: Dorsal (or posterior). Definition: To the back. The spine is dorsal to the sternum. Term: Proximal Definition: For extremities, meaning near the trunk. The elbow is proximal to the wrist.
