Term: Endocrine gland Definition: Gland that makes a hormone, releasing it directly into the fluid outside the gland. Term: Epithelium Definition: A sheet like tissue that has one free surface. Epithelia line body cavities, ducts, and tubes or protect an underlying tissue. Term: Exocrine gland Definition: Gland that releases the substance it makes through a duct or tube. Term: Tissue Definition: A group of similar cells that perform a specific function. Term: Adipose tissue Definition: Tissue that stores fat in adipose (fat) cells Term: Bone tissue Definition: The hard main tissue in bone, mineralized with calcium salts. Term: Cartilage Definition: Pliable tissue with a matrix consisting of collagen and elastin fibers in a rubbery ground substance. Term: Connective tissue Definition: Tissue that connects and supports body parts; all types consist of cells and fibers in a matrix.

Term: Fibrous connective tissue Definition: Connective tissue having a matrix that makes it strong and stretchy; varying characteristics of the matrix result in loose, dense, and elastic forms. Term: Matrix Definition: The blend of cells, fibers, and ground substances that gives each type of connective tissue it's specialized properties. Term: Axon Definition: The neuron extension that carries outgoing messages. Term: Dendrite Definition: A neuron extension that receives incoming messages. Term: Glial cell Definition: Any of the large number of cells in the nervous system that support neurons physically or in others ways.

Term: Adhering junction Definition: A weld like junction between cells that keeps cells tightly attached to one another. Term: Gap junction Definition: A channel that connects the cytoplasm of neighboring cells. Term: Tight junction Definition: A strand of protein that helps stop leaks between cells in a tissue by forming a gasket-like seal. Term: Cutaneous membrane Definition: The skin, a type of epithelial membrane Term: Mucous membrane Definition: Epithelial membrane that lines tubes and cavities of the digestive, respiratory, urinary, and reproductive systems.
