What does that mean, to live an “ascetic” lifestyle? An ascetic lifestyle consists of avoiding sensual pleasures for the spiritual gods. 2. List two foundations of the Zhou political structure in China. The Zhou political structure had regional allies that payed tribute to state and regional leaders for providing laborers or warriors. Also, The Zhou political structure made the royal calendar. 3. What’s the Mandate of Heaven, and how is it related to the Zhou empire? The Mandate of Heaven is a rule between people and their God, where they could defend the political structure. Good rulers got the Mandate of heaven, while bad ones had it revoked. It is similar to the Zhou empire because it supports a morally correct takeover of the Shang. 4. What did the ancient Chinese believe happened to the soul of somebody who died? The Chinese believed that the spirit of whomever died would live forever in the afterworld and that their ancestors’ sprits could help them.
