Section 1 Key names and Imp figures of the Arab Annahda (Awakening)1.Butros Al Boustani Butrus al-Bustani (1819-1883) was awriter and scholar from modern day Lebanon. He is one of the most important figures in the Annahda. After being greatly educated in various languages and fields, he opened a schoolwhich attempted to reform educationby pushing for languages and sciences without a religious theme. It was more of a nationalistic aim, welcoming students from all religions and races. He then wrote Arabic encyclopediaand dictionariesto revive the Arabic language. He became known as the Master and Father of the Arab Renaissance”Butros Al-Bustani (1819-1883)He was a writer and scholar from present day Lebanon. He was a major figure in the Arabic Renaissance, which began in Egyptin the late 19th century and spread to the Middle East.He is considered to be the firstSyrian nationalist,[1]due to his publication ofNafir Suriawhich began following the1860 Mount Lebanon civil war.It was during the preceding years throughout the 1860s that his major contributions to the Nahda emerged. These included a daily newspaperand the first Arabic encyclopediaAl-Muhit al Muhit (The ocean of oceans) and an Arabic dictionarydairat al-ma’arif (dictionary of knowledge). Al-Bustani’s intention in these works was to form a common body of knowledgewhich, though was very French, was considered universal. It was at this time that he came to be known famously as the Master and Father of theArabic Renaissance. The greater part of his life’s work was reviving and creating a love for the Arabic language, bringing Arabic into a place of affluence and utility as a tool for Arabs to express their thoughts and ideas in the modernising world of the 19th century.
2.FairuzFairuz (1935-present) is a singer from Lebanon. She is one of the most admired and respected living singers in the Arab world. Her nicknames include “Ambassador to the Stars” and “Neighbour to the Moon” and “Jewel of Lebanon”. Her songs were originally written by the Rahbani brothers, but later carried on with her son Ziad Rahbani. She alsoparticipated in musicals which combined storytelling, dialogue, lyrics and music from Lebanese folkloric to classical to westernized jazz. The music expressed patriotism, love and nostalgia for the village life, comedy, drama and philosophy. Her music is known forstarting the morning of millions of Arabs, especially Lebanese people. Many claim her music helped build the identity of Lebanon. oNotable songs: Ya Tayr, Nehna wil Ama Jeeran, Kifak Inta, Habbeytak Bessayf Fairuz (1935—now)Nouhad Wadie' Haddadis aLebanesesinger who is one of the most widely admired and deeply respected living singers in theArab world.Her songs are constantly heard throughout the region.
