ASSIGNMENT 2 1. Identify and state the historical significance of the following: a. Benedict Arnold -  American military general. He fought with skill and courage in many campaigns  during the  American Revolution  (1775–83). Is best known as the man who betrayed his country.  Benedict Arnold was one of the most accomplished American military commanders in the War for Independence. b. John Burgoyne –  remembers best for the British failure at the battle of Saratoga.  Best known as the man who betrayed his country .  This mistake was made by taking an army of 6,000 British soldiers down  the Hudson River, where lack of reinforcements and supplies led to his defeat and surrender. c. Charles Cornwallis -  became major general in 1775, served under Sir Henry Clinton during the  American Revolution  in the successful campaign to capture  New York  (1776), and led the pursuit across  New Jersey . As Lord Lieutenant and Commander-in-Chief of Ireland, Cornwallis unsuccessfully argued  for Catholic emancipation, and helped secure passage of the Act of Union, which created the United  Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland . d. George Rogers Clark-  born in Charlottesville,  Virginia , in November 1752. commissioned as a major  by  Virginia  to defend the area as best he could with his ragtag, undersupplied group of volunteers. He  managed to capture British vantage points along the Ohio at Kaskaskia and Cahokia in the  Illinois  country in 1778, and Vincennes ( Indiana ) on the Wabash River in 1779. e. Richard Henry Lee-  George Rogers Clark (1752-1818) an American Revolutionary War soldier. His  capture of British posts on the far frontier was of considerable importance, though the idea that Clark  "won the Northwest" is an oft-repeated exaggeration. f.  Horatio Gates -  fought in the battle at Fort Duquesne and was one of the victors of the Seven Years  War, also known as  the French Indian War .  known as an affectionate husband, father, and generous  land owner who set his slaves free before his death. g. John Paul Jones-  born in Scotland in 1742. was the United States' first well-known naval fighter in the American Revolutionary War. Although he made enemies among America's political elites, his actions in  British waters during the.  h. William Howe-  born August 10, 1729. was promoted to lieutenant the following year and captain in  1750. In this capacity, he took part in  Major General Jeffery Amherst 's successful  siege of Louisbourg . He helped defend Quebec through the winter before aiding in Amherst's capture of Montreal. Opposed the  Intolerable Acts
