Term 1, 2017/2018 STAT 101 INTRODUCTORY STATISTICS - GROUPS 1, 2, 3 & 4 Class Exercise 1 – Solutions 1. (An SMU employee’s point of view) As an SMU employee, I feel that it is not ethical to force a group of students buying the recommended textbooks and to restrict the other group of students not buying the textbooks in the study. Therefore, most likely I would run the case-control observational study in this case. Some students who choose to buy the textbooks would be in the case group while other students who choose not to buy the textbooks would be in the control group. The variable of interest is the final scores (or final grades) of students in the sample. By comparing the average final scores of students in both groups at the end of the term, we learn whether the group buying the textbooks has a significance higher average final score when comparing with the other group. However, it is possible that students who buy the textbook are eager to get a better grade in the course and would spend more time and efforts to study the course materials.

### What students are saying

• As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

• I cannot even describe how much Course Hero helped me this summer. It’s truly become something I can always rely on and help me. In the end, I was not only able to survive summer classes, but I was able to thrive thanks to Course Hero.

Dana University of Pennsylvania ‘17, Course Hero Intern

• The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
